Even though Upper Bucks set aside the evening of February 24th to honor our eight newest members of the Honor Society, those students, their parents and other guests received a lesson in serving—from two men who are fine examples of Christian servants. First the Honor Society President and Chaplain Mike Schmidt, a junior at UBCS, gave a speech about the expectations the school has of these new members. He said it isn’t enough for them to display excellent conduct and earn excellent grades; they need to notice the needs of the student body and try to help meet those needs. He also reminded them of the reward for their added responsibility: a study tour! This year’s tour will be to Gettysburg and Lancaster (to see Sight and Sound’s "Behold the Lamb").
After a wonderful dinner courtesy of Carolee Bergey and her daughter Lynn Barth, Mr. Dave Heffernan (UBCS parent and owner of a Chic-Fil-A restaurant in Oxford Valley mall) gave his testimony of how the Lord directed in his life to get him to this place of service. Both Mr. Heffernan and the corporation of Chic-Fil-A realize that God can use His servants even in the food-service industry. He gave every inductee and family at the banquet a copy of the founder’s newest book and spent some time explaining the acrostic S-E-R-V-E in that book. Mr. Heffernan also gave each person a keychain with a single light to remind us of the verse on his business card (“Let your light so shine before men” Mt. 5:16) and of the truth that each one of us can make a difference no matter where we are if we are only willing to be used by the Lord to share His truth.
