5th Grade Enjoys a Day in Home Economics

Sam Reichley prepares to bakeWhat a delicious day Mrs. Jacobs' fifth grade class had on Wednesday, May 20. This particular day had been scheduled twice before but was cancelled due to snow. Mrs. Jacobs decided to wait until the possibility of snow was gone before rescheduling. The day finally arrived and everyone was excited! The students had completed several literature novels this year and one was entitled The Penderwicks. Within the story there had been recipes made by the characters which promoted the idea of how much fun it would be for the students to recreate these recipes themselves as part of the unit. The two recipes decided on were chocolate chip cookies and brownies.

The students worked diligently during the beginning of their day on Wednesday to get all of their class work accomplished. At 1:30 in the afternoon they were on their way to the Main Campus to make their creations in the Home Ec. room. Mrs. Rodenbach along with Mrs. Snyder assisted Mrs. Jacobs in helping the students make their delicious desserts. Many people who were in Timothy that day smelled the wonderful aroma, but only the fifth graders enjoyed the reward. The students did a wonderful job measuring ingredients, cracking eggs, greasing pans, and of course, in licking the spoons when done! Each student got to eat as well as take home some of the fruits of their labor that day. One student even mentioned to Mrs. Jacobs that she wished that the elementary had Home Ec. classes. Bringing literature novels alive to young students is always an exciting time and adding food to the experience just makes it "out of this world".
