Honor Society Trip - Lancaster & Gettysburg
by Miss Patti McKeown
Four seniors, three juniors, and five sophomores who are never all together in a single class or on a single team get a chance to unite for the purpose of making a difference in our school and community. Here are some of their comments on the trip:
“I really enjoyed the behind-the-scenes tour of Sight and Sound.”—Mike Schmidt
“I really enjoyed finding out how everything works behind the scenes.”—Jordan Zender
“It was my first time going to Sight and Sound.”—Christina Thomas
“It was so exciting to see Behold the Lamb right before Easter.”—Stephanie McDavid
“I was really amazed by the show. I’ve heard Christ’s story many times, but when I saw it come to life like that . . . it was incredible!”—Alyssa Lage
“It’s something I will probably recall every time I read about Christ’s life.”—Kevin Ott
“It was neat to be able to talk to the others about our thoughts and views on the play” the next morning as we drove to Gettysburg.—Cassie Walter
Before we toured Gettysburg battlefields, we visited the museum of the Christian Commission where we learned more about Lincoln’s role in the war and heard lots of stories of Christians having opportunities to minister to the thousands of soldiers through this little-known organization. “I never knew about the Christian Commission during the Civil War. It was awesome to see God at work during that time!”—Mark McDavid.
Later we toured the battlefields with the founder, John Wega, dressed as a Civil War soldier. “The most amazing thing I saw was looking across the field where the Confederates marched for Pickett’s Charge.
I never realized how far it was! They must have been exhausted!”—Amy Steward
“I enjoyed [having Mr. Wega get us out to] stand all in a long line side-by-side looking out at that battlefield. It was very sobering to think about what had taken place there.”—Kelli Steward
“Everyone should visit Gettysburg through the Christian Commission!”—Pastor Baun.
He really enjoyed the time at Gettysburg. He and Mrs. Allebach, our school nurse, joined Miss McKeown as chaperones, getting some time with some remarkable young Christians.
Even though we traveled in three vans, we were able to talk and play games together over walkie-talkies. “Mark making his
animal noises was hilarious.”—Jordan Baun.
“Being able to bond with the other Honor Society members was great!”—Cassie Walter
“It was a great experience! We had so much fun together!”—Liz Stolvoort
Both Sight and Sound and Gettysburg stressed one very important fact: God can use all of us in “full-time Christian service” doing all kinds of things: carpentry, electronics, animal training, or even serving coffee and writing letters. We just need to yield our lives to His purpose.
We would like to say a special thank you to our patrons for making this trip possible!! Especially with four seniors already paying for a class trip and two of our families having two children as members—plus the state of our current economy, our Honor Society families really appreciated your help. YOU gave over $2300 toward the trip expenses. I hope these thoughts from the members make you realize how very worthwhile
your giving is!
