English 7

This course is a study of English with an emphasis on grammar, usage, sentence structure, diagramming, reading, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation, some literature and basic writing skills. Students will study the works of many different authors as different genres are introduced. Book reviews will be required.

English 8

This course continues to review and emphasize grammar, vocabulary and some literature. Note cards, outlines, rough drafts and bibliography rules are introduced in basic writing. Varied literature assignments are used to develop character and an appreciation for writing.

Junior High Speech

The most foundational speech course, junior high speech is designed to introduce the students to the basics of speech. Personal experience, demonstration, impromptu, informative, and devotional speeches are some of the types used to develop techniques necessary for the students to deliver a speech with confidence.

English 9

This course is an intermediate study of English with an review on grammar, sentence structure, diagramming, usage, punctuation, spelling and basic writing skills. The literature aspect is a survey of some major works. The students are acquainted with the background of the authors' lives, with the elements of a short story, and with rhythm and meter in poetry. Students will memorize a selection each quarter. Quarterly book reports are to be completed.

English 10

Foundational to high school English, this course involves a strong emphasis on vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, usage and mechanics. The students will be writing several types of paragraphs and essays. Literature is a survey of some of the major works of early American literature, concentrating on historical and philosophical context as well as author background, genre study and a review of the elements of fiction and poetry. Two outside reading projects are required each year.

English 11

Concentrating on composition, students are required to complete all steps in the writing of a formal research paper in order to pass the course. Grammar review and vocabulary study aim at improving writing skills. Literature begins with Transcendentalism and proceeds to modern American works of fiction and poetry. Two outside reading projects are required each year.

English 12

This course involves a rapid review of grammar, which develops into concentrated writing. Chosen British literature is included to develop the student's ability to reason and communicate with accuracy the biblical principles (or lack thereof) in all literature and to guide them in their reading habits. A literary analysis research paper is required.

Speech

The senior high speech course is designed to complement both the incoming junior high speech student and the beginning senior high non-speech student. First semester focuses on public speaking, speech writing and delivery. Projects include demonstrations, infomative and persuasive speeches and spiritual challenges. Second semester focuses on interpretive speech, such as poetry reading and story telling. In addition, senior high speech students are featured in chapel, and encouraged to participate in competitions.


Foreign Language Department

Spanish I

Spanish I is an introductory course to the Spanish language. The student will become acquainted with the elements of good pronunciation and elementary speaking skills along with the cultural formalities of the Hispanic world. The student on this level will develop written skills and be exposed to elementary reading. The learning of Bible verses and Bible songs in Spanish is a part of this introductory course.

Spanish II

In this course, the student will be able to understand a native speaker and further develop his ability to communicate with a native speaker in a proficient manner. There will be more in-depth study of grammatical structure in the Spanish language. Development of the Scriptures (in Spanish) along with hymns in the native language will be studied.
