Philosophy and Purpose

Throughout the United States the course, formerly known as Home Economics, has taken on the name Family and Consumer Science. Although the name has changed the goal at UBCS is still the same, and that is, to train young ladies to develop life skills essential to success. This includes one’s spiritual life, personal life, family life and service to God and others.

7th and 8th Grade

Students will study kitchen safety, cooking terms, recipe reading, and will experience working in one of the four well-equipped kitchen labs. They will also learn hand stitches, sewing machine management, and construct a project reinforcing the skills taught. Personal care, clothing, etiquette, and building godly friendships are also included throughout the year.

Family and Consumer Science 1
(generally offered to students in 9th -12th grade)

This course includes nutrition and foods, meal planning, preparation, serving and storage of food, and instilling the principle of good health in order to serve the Lord more effectively. Fabric construction, pattern alterations and clothing construction will enable students to make wise clothing choices. The student will also receive well-rounded Biblical instruction for establishing solid values, goals and standards in decision making and dating relationships.

Family and Consumer Science 2
(FCS 1 is generally a prerequisite for this course)

Dress construction will include more advanced techniques such as collars, set-in sleeves and button holes. This course focuses more on establishing godly homes and marriages. Students will learn aspects involved in planning a wedding, understanding adjustments in marriage, early child-hood years, and decorating a home using the resources God has given them. Foods will include the selection, preparation, and storage of meats, vegetables and candy-making.
