Success Stories - Lynn Barth '92

Alumni, Mother & Grateful Daughter

Like many of our alumni, Lynn (Bergey) Barth (UBCS graduate of 1992) has the wonderful privilege of being a wife and a mother to two young children. She recalls for us her own mother’s sacrifice for her and her brothers.

“As a child, I didn’t understand the true value of Christian education, or even the sacrifices that were involved in sending a child to a Christian school. My parents (Paul & Carolee Bergey) had 4 children in Upper Bucks at one time. And I understand now …that’s no easy task! Granted, we didn’t drive the nicest of cars, or have the trendiest clothes. But we had parents who valued our education over those things, and were committed to making it happen.

In order for us to attend Upper Bucks, my mom (who is a nurse) worked 3rd shift to help towards the school bills. Working those hours also allowed her to be available to meet the needs of us kids. Mom always made a point to be at the important things. Whether it was a field trip, a class chapel, a basketball game, or a music competition…just to name a few…Mom was there.

But more importantly, Mom was there for the less important days. Maybe it was the day I didn’t do well on a test or quiz, or had some personal struggles to work through. Mom made it a point to be available for those little times as well. She was a shoulder to cry on, a personal cheerleader, a great source of advice, but most importantly, she was (and still is!) a mother who loved her children unconditionally, even if it meant sacrifices on her part.

As a mother myself now, I see things differently. The things I valued as a high school student are different than what I value now. I can say now with deeper appreciation that I’m thankful for a mom who was willing to sacrifice her own time, energy, and SLEEP, so that she could be a vital part in her children’s lives.”
