Compassion & Care

Mendy Ricketts, UBCS grad of 1994, is a unit secretary/behavioral specialist for a psychiatric hospital in Florida. She writes about her time at UBCS and what she most appreciated from her years here.

“Greetings from Florida! I am a graduate of UBCS, class of 1994. Since that time, I graduated from Pensacola Christian College in 1996 with a A.S. in Medical Secretarial. I now work in the Tampa Bay area and my job demands that I be very careful and meticulous with patient charts especially for chart audits and transcribing doctor’s orders.
Miss Patti McKeown comes to my mind often as someone who influenced us to give our best in everything that we do. She also had a great impact on my life personally in her compassion and sense of humor which I need desperately as I deal with these patients who are going through withdrawal from drugs and alcohol.

When I am not at work I crochet a great deal. I want to thank Mrs. Leigh Houck for teaching me in high school through the crochet club a skill I have kept up and have learned to truly love over the years. I make one to two afghans a month and hand them out as gifts for people who need them.

Even though through my job I have sustained an occasional black eye or broken finger during crisis behaviors, I still have countless opportunities to share the Lord with my patients. I always pray that they will see Him through me.

I thank each and every teacher and administrator at UBCS for the foundation they set for me in my life to help me pass on all that I have learned to others. You are all loved and forever in my heart.”
