Fine Art

Welcome to Art Class!

UBCS offers a wide variety of art classes for students in Grades K-12 – from color basics in Kindergarten to advanced techniques in high school. Our high school students can also be involved in helping create our school yearbook! Students display their art all throughout the year at different programs or contests; Yearbook students present their work in front of the student body at the end of the year – usually followed by a “signing party!”

Beginning Art (K-6th Grade)

Beginning Art (K-6th Grade)

Goals for Beginning Art include first, learning about two artists a year and making projects that are inspired by their work. Secondly, projects throughout the year that cover a variety of mediums and styles so students experience different types of art. And last, each project will focus an on an artistic principle or two for students to master on that project, like line, form, value, color, texture, pattern, shape, and space. Student projects are graded on neatness, creativity, and following directions.

Typography and Calligraphy (7th Grade)

Typography and Calligraphy (7th Grade)

Students learn about type and design, and what makes a good composition. Lettering with a Calligraphy pen helps with coordination and hand control. Near the end students work with watercolors for a background to the final project. Students learn how to emphasize the most important thing or word in their artwork to convey the positive message they want to get across.

Beginning Drawing (8th Grade)

The foundations of perspective, value and form are laid in this class. Students work with pencils and colored pencils to lay a strong foundation for more advanced drawing classes.

In addition to Advanced Art classes, our High School students can also take Yearbook classes and become an editor and photographer for the school yearbook that is given to each family. Yearbook Editors design the book with the help of their Yearbook Advisor(s). Yearbook students take an annual trip to learn about more features the editing programs offer as well enter contests for local or nationwide competitions. At the end of the school year, our Yearbook students get to present their work in front of the student body before having the fun “signing party!”
